Verification of Diagrammatic Proofs

چکیده

Human mathematicians often "prove" theorems by the use of diagrams and manipulations on them. We call these diagrammatic proofs. rn (Jamnik, Bundy, & Green 1997) we presented how "informal" reasoning with diagrams can be automated. Three stages of proof extraction procedure were identified. First, concrete rather than general diagrams are used to prove particular instances of the universally quantified theorem. The diagrammatic proof is captured by the use of geometric operations on the diagram. Second, an abstracted schematic proof of the universally quantified theorem is automatically induced from these proof instances. Third, the final step is to confirm that the abstraction of the schematic proof from the proof instances is sound. Our main focus in this paper is on the third stage, the verification of schematic proofs. We define a theory of diagrams where we prove the correctness of a schematic proof. Vie give an example of an extraction of a schematic proof for a theorem about the sum of odd naturals, and prove its correctness in the theory of diagrams.

Speedith: A Diagrammatic Reasoner for Spider Diagrams

In this paper, we introduce Speedith which is a diagrammatic theorem prover for the language of spider diagrams. Spider diagrams are a well-known logic for which there is a sound and complete set of inference rules. Speedith provides a way to input diagrams, transform them via the diagrammatic inference rules, and prove diagrammatic theorems. It is designed as a program that plugs into existing...

Speedith: A Reasoner for Spider Diagrams

In this paper, we introduce Speedith which is an interactive diagrammatic theorem prover for the well-known language of spider diagrams. Speedith provides a way to input spider diagrams, transform them via the diagrammatic inference rules, and prove diagrammatic theorems. Speedith’s inference rules are sound and complete, extending previous research by including all the classical logic connecti...

Abstraction , Visualisation and Graphical Proof

In this paper we investigate the process of learning and verifying graphical theorems through abstraction and visualisation. First, the notion of effectiveness of a representation is discussed from both a computational and a cognitive perspective; the nature of the relation between external representations and abstraction in these two views, and its implications for diagrammatic reasoning in AI...

Ribbon Proofs for Separation Logic A verification pearl

We present ribbon proofs, a diagrammatic proof system for separation logic. Inspired by an eponymous system due to Bean, ribbon proofs emphasise the structure of a proof, so are intelligible and hence useful pedagogically. Because they contain less redundancy than proof outlines, and allow each proof step to be checked locally, they are highly scalable (and we illustrate this with a ribbon proo...

On the Readability of Diagrammatic Proofs

Recently, much effort has been placed on developing diagrammatic logics, with a focus on obtaining sound and complete reasoning systems. A hypothesis of the diagrammatic reasoning community is that many people find diagrammatic proofs easier to read than symbolic proofs. This hypothesis has not been thoroughly tested, although significant effort has been directed towards understanding what make...
